Moonshot AI, a Beijing-based AI startup, plans to release the weights of its K3 model on July 27, allowing developers to download, modify, and host it as scrutiny of Chinese AI intensifies in the US.

Moonshot describes K3 as a 2.8-trillion-parameter mixture-of-experts model with native vision and a 1-million-token context window. Benchmark summaries place it at 57 points on Artificial Analysis’ Intelligence Index.

Reports say the weights are expected to be released under a Modified MIT license that would allow commercial use, although K3 remains available only through an application programming interface until the repository and final terms are published.

K3’s launch this month reportedly triggered a selloff in AI-related stocks. Bloomberg Intelligence said open-weight models accounted for 68% of token volume after the launches of K3 and Z.AI’s GLM-5.2.

The latest US allegations were made public by Michael Kratsios, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. He said Moonshot accessed remotely GB300 servers in Thailand and used distillation from Anthropic’s Fable model.

Moonshot has not responded to requests for comment, and a Chinese embassy spokesperson previously rejected similar claims.

The company is also reportedly seeking a funding round at a US$50 billion valuation ahead of a possible Hong Kong initial public offering as soon as this year.
