China’s Moonshot AI launches Kimi K2.6 model

Moonshot AI released its open-source model Kimi K2.6 on April 20, adding features for coding, front-end generation.

Agent workflows as Chinese tech firms such as Alibaba, ByteDance, and Tencent keep backing open-source AI.

Moonshot said Kimi K2.6 matched or beat closed models including GPT-5.4, Claude Opus 4.6, and Gemini 3.1 Pro on some benchmarks, though the source text said those results have limited independent verification because evaluation standards remain uneven.

The release comes as Chinese AI firms adopt mixed strategies, with companies including Alibaba Cloud and Zhipu AI also rolling out closed-source models.
