China’s leading auto-mapping firm invests $35m in robotics
Navinfo (四图维新) has announced a 250 million yuan (US$35 million) investment in PhiGent Robotics (鉴智机器人).
Founded in the early 2000s, Navinfo is a China-based automotive mapping provider.
After the deal, Navinfo will hold a 39.1% stake in PhiGent, becoming its largest shareholder but not taking control.
The companies plan to integrate their intelligent driving businesses and teams to create a new entity, “New PhiGent” with about 1,000 employees.
PhiGent teams in Beijing and Shanghai have already moved into Navinfo’s offices.
“New PhiGent” will offer intelligent driving solutions using Horizon Robotics’ J6 series and Qualcomm chipsets.
Facing competition from Baidu and Alibaba’s Amap, Navinfo has expanded into high-precision mapping, autonomous driving, vehicle networking, intelligent cockpit, intelligent chip, and intelligent driving as part of its transformation efforts.
