China’s export rules delay Tesla’s Optimus robot production
Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced on April 22, 2025 that production of the company’s Optimus humanoid robots is facing delays due to China’s export restrictions on rare earth magnets.
These restrictions are part of China’s efforts to limit rare earth supply in response to US tariffs.
Musk indicated that China seeks assurances that these magnets will not be used for military purposes.
China’s export controls affect not only raw minerals but also finished products like magnets.
Analysts believe these controls could complicate the replacement of these materials, as approval from the Ministry of Commerce may take weeks or months.
Musk had previously estimated that Tesla would produce thousands of Optimus robots in 2025.
However, these current restrictions may impact the company’s ability to meet that goal.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ U.S.-China tech rivalry creates ripple effects across supply chains
Tesla’s Optimus robot situation illustrates how technology companies are caught in the broader U.S.-China trade tensions that have escalated since 2017.
The tech rivalry has already caused significant disruptions, with China incurring nearly $150 billion in lost exports to the U.S. due to these trade tensions, forcing a restructuring of global trade flows 1.
Despite these tensions, the two economies remain deeply interconnected, as evidenced by the fact that about 30% of semiconductor manufacturing machinery exported by the U.S. still goes to China 1.
The introduction of new export controls by China on critical materials disrupts foreign companies’ access to essential components, creating significant challenges for global supply chains that have historically depended on Chinese materials 2.
Companies across the technology sector are now facing increased risks and costs due to these geopolitical pressures, with many being forced to rethink their supply chain strategies and risk management approaches.
