China’s EV market struggles as BYD shares fall, prices drop
China’s electric vehicle (EV) industry is facing challenges as market leader BYD reports a decline in its share price and increasing competition.
BYD’s Hong Kong-listed shares fell by up to 17% on June 2, 2025, erasing HK$122.3 billion (US$15.6 billion) in market value before recovering by 4% on June 3, 2025.
The decline followed BYD’s weaker-than-expected earnings and a price reduction on 22 models aimed at boosting sales.
In May, BYD delivered 382,476 vehicles, reflecting a modest 0.6% increase from April.
However, domestic sales showed little year-on-year growth and decreased by 2.5% from April amid ongoing price cuts.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ China’s EV price war reflects a long-term strategic approach to market dominance
Today’s BYD-led price cuts are actually the latest chapter in a decades-long government-supported strategy to develop China’s EV industry.
Since the early 2000s, China has systematically built this sector through massive investments, including a $15 billion government pledge for EV development and initiatives like the “863 EV Project” launched in 2001 1.
These sustained efforts have created structural advantages that enable the current aggressive pricing. Chinese manufacturers control 62% of the world’s graphite production essential for batteries while benefiting from lower labor costs and economies of scale 2.
The results are striking: while EV prices in China dropped by 50% between 2015-2022 (from €67,000 to €32,000), they increased by 12.5% in the US and 17% in Europe during the same period 2.
This price war doesn’t merely reflect short-term competitive pressures but demonstrates China’s long-term commitment to EV leadership through price competitiveness, even at the cost of temporary profitability.
2️⃣ Aggressive pricing creates global ripple effects beyond China’s borders
The current Chinese EV price war is creating significant international trade tensions with substantial economic implications.
Chinese manufacturers employ complex pricing strategies abroad. For example, the BYD Atto 3 costs approximately $19,283 in China but sells for $42,789 in Germany, positioning as a premium offering while still undercutting European competitors 3.
