China’s EV boom fuels 90% chip import reliance
China’s electric vehicle (EV) production has surged, leading to an increased demand for automotive chips.
However, over 90% of these chips are imported from foreign suppliers, according to industry analysts.
Officials from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) highlighted the country’s low self-sufficiency in automotive semiconductors.
Wang Qing, from the Development Research Centre of the State Council, noted that the dependence on foreign suppliers reaches 95%.
Self-sufficiency for computing and control chips is under 1%, and power and memory chips are only at 8%.
This reliance on imported chips has become more pressing amid rising geopolitical tensions with the United States.
