🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

China’s digital boom is outpacing its broader economy

  • China’s digital industry grew revenue by 12.9% in the first quarter, well ahead of the country’s 5% gross domestic product (GDP) growth. That makes it one of the stronger drivers in the economy 1.
  • The gap stands out against weaker areas such as real estate, where property investment fell 11.2% in the same period 1.
  • Profits in the sector climbed 23.6%, compared with 15.5% for China’s wider industrial enterprises, giving digital businesses a clear edge in earnings 1.

China’s 5G infrastructure is a backbone for an industrial overhaul

  • China has built more than 4.9 million 5G base stations as part of a wider push to digitize industry, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology 2.
  • That network supports more than 18,500 projects that pair 5G with the Industrial Internet, which links factory machines and systems for real-time data sharing and automation. These uses now reach 80 of China’s 97 major economic categories 3.
  • Smart factories built on this setup have cut product research and development cycles by 28.4% on average while raising production efficiency by 22.3% 3.
  • China plans deeper links between the industrial internet and AI by 2028, including network upgrades at no fewer than 50,000 enterprises 4.
