China’s CXMT readies Beijing NAND research line: sources

China’s CXMT, or ChangXin Memory Technologies, is preparing to enter the NAND flash market with a research and development line at a new Beijing plant, according to three sources.

The move would take CXMT beyond dynamic random access memory, or DRAM, and pit it against Samsung, SK hynix, Micron, and domestic rival YMTC in chips that store data in phones, computers, and data centers.

It is unclear when the line will start operating or whether trial work will lead to large-scale production.

The sources said CXMT has discussed the plan with customers, including a newly established startup that intends to buy its NAND chips for storage products used in AI systems and supercomputers.

The expansion would come amid a global memory shortage.

The sources said strong demand from AI servers has tightened supply, while the US rules restrict some semiconductor manufacturing equipment exports to China, a factor that could affect any later scale-up.
