China’s CXMT begins hiring in Japan to expand globally
ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), a leading Chinese memory chip maker, has publicly disclosed details about its Japanese subsidiary for the first time since its 2020 launch.
In a new recruitment ad, CXMT revealed it has offices in Yokohama and Fukuoka and is hiring integrated-circuit design graduates from universities outside China, targeting the class of 2026.
Candidates must hold a master’s degree in microelectronics or semiconductor design, with preference for PhD holders.
The move supports CXMT’s push to expand in the global DRAM market.
A report by ChosunBiz, citing Omdia, projects CXMT’s DRAM production could rival Micron Technology by 2025 and reach about half of SK Hynix’s output.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Semiconductor geopolitics shows cyclical patterns across decades
CXMT’s strategic expansion into Japan reflects historical patterns of how semiconductor competition has intersected with geopolitics.
In the 1980s, when Japanese firms dominated 80% of the global DRAM market, the United States responded with aggressive policy interventions, including forcing Japan to sign the 1986 US-Japan Semiconductor Agreement that imposed pricing rules on Japanese manufacturers.
The symbolic smashing of a Toshiba stereo by US lawmakers in 1987, followed by sanctions that severely impacted Toshiba’s revenue through heavy import duties, demonstrates how semiconductor leadership has long been viewed as a national security priority by Washington.
Today’s environment, where CXMT was notably absent from recent US export restrictions partly due to Japanese lobbying efforts, highlights how semiconductor supply chains continue to be shaped by complex diplomatic considerations beyond pure market forces.
These historical parallels suggest that CXMT’s recruitment and expansion in Japan may be as much about navigating geopolitical complexities as it is about technological advancement.
2️⃣ Strategic talent acquisition reflects semiconductor industry’s deep national knowledge bases
CXMT’s specific targeting of university graduates outside China for its Japanese offices reveals how semiconductor companies leverage regional expertise that developed over decades.
Japan’s semiconductor industry, despite losing market dominance, maintains deep institutional knowledge from its 1980s heyday when it housed seven of the world’s top ten chipmakers and pioneered many memory technologies.
