China’s Changan invests $31.8m in robotics, follows BYD, Xpeng

Changan Automobile will invest US$31.8 million for a 50% stake in Changan Tianshu Intelligent Robotics Technology.

The company plans to release prototypes of self-developed humanoid robots next year and unveil its first in-vehicle robot in Q1 2026.

This move follows similar initiatives from BYD, Xpeng, and Xiaomi.

Xpeng recently introduced its second-generation Iron humanoid robot, with plans for mass production in 2026.

China’s National Development and Reform Commission warned the humanoid robot sector is not yet fully mature and cautioned against a potential market bubble.

Xiaomi has also hired former Tesla engineer Zach Lu Zeyu to lead its dexterous hand R&D operations.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Changan’s humanoid plan lists partners, but tech base remains unclear

  • Changan formed a 450 million RMB joint venture, keeping 60% via itself and Changan Keji 1. China Changan Automobile Group and Chenzhi Automotive Technology Group own the other 40% 1.
  • It showed a “Xiao An” prototype with 40 degrees of freedom and over 2 hours of battery life 1. The filing does not say if actuators (motorized joint components) or AI models are licensed, built in house or acquired 1.
  • The “1+N+X” setup (one core platform, partner tracks, exploratory projects) lists no partners 1. BYD and NIO (a Chinese electric-vehicle maker) have begun factory trials, which raises the bar for differentiation 2.

Component suppliers can capture near-term demand from China’s auto humanoid push

  • JAC Auto (a Chinese automaker) issued an October 2025 tender for full-size humanoids with five-finger hands, while China FAW (First Automobile Works, a state-owned automaker) set a 2.574 million RMB cap for a service bid 3. These moves lift demand for actuators, harmonic reducers (precision robotic gearboxes), and dexterous hands 3.
  • Orders are flowing. Ubtech (a Chinese robotics company) booked 90.51 million RMB from Miyi (Shanghai) Auto (an automotive firm) 2. Zhonghaida supplies Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensors, which track motion or orientation, to Xpeng-linked work 3. Zhongding (rubber parts) won deals tied to Chery programs 3.
  • Ubtech guides to 1.1 billion RMB of 2025 orders 4 and targets about 1,000 humanoids this year 2. Component makers should prioritize automotive-grade safety certification (stringent standards for equipment used near people or on production lines) and edge AI middleware (software that runs AI on local devices to join sensors with applications) for factory quality inspection.
