China’s Cambricon warns investors after shares double in a month
Cambricon Technologies, a Shanghai-listed AI chip designer, warned investors of trading risks after its shares more than doubled in one month.
The company said in a stock exchange filing that its share price has significantly outpaced both peers and market indexes, raising concerns that it may not reflect its current fundamentals.
Cambricon shares have surged 134% since July 28, far exceeding the CSI 300 Index’s 7.9% rise, and closed up 16% on August 28, at 1,587.9 yuan (US$222.7).
The company forecasts 2025 revenue between 5 billion yuan (US$701 million) and 7 billion yuan (US$981.6 million), after reporting 1.2 billion yuan in 2024.
Cambricon also said it does not plan to release new products and labeled recent online rumors about upcoming launches as false.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Retail-dominated markets amplify disconnect between hype and fundamentals
Cambricon’s warning reveals a recurring pattern in China’s retail-heavy stock market where speculative momentum can drive valuations far beyond company performance.
The chipmaker’s 134% surge since July 28 vastly outpaced the CSI 300 Index’s 7.9% gain over the same period, prompting management to explicitly warn that “the stock price may have deviated from the company’s current fundamentals”1.
This disconnect becomes more pronounced in China’s market structure, which is heavily dominated by retail traders rather than institutional investors1.
The broader market context shows similar speculative behavior, with Chinese stocks adding more than $1 trillion in market value this month amid rising retail participation and margin buying, particularly in AI and semiconductor sectors2.
Brokerages and fund managers are now cutting back on financing and limiting purchases due to growing investor risk concerns, while banks are tightening oversight of clients using credit cards to fund stock investments1.
2️⃣ AI infrastructure boom creates cyclical amplification in semiconductor stocks
Cambricon’s explosive growth trajectory mirrors the broader semiconductor cycle being supercharged by AI demand, but also highlights the volatility risks inherent in this sector.
The company’s revenue forecast of 5-7 billion yuan for 2025 represents a potential 317% to 483% increase from its 2024 revenue of 1.2 billion yuan1.
