China uses AI to advance healthcare, drug discovery

Chinese researchers are using AI to advance medical research, healthcare delivery, and rehabilitation therapies.

A team led by Professor Yu Jintai at Huashan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University used AI to analyze over 1 million samples, identifying five mutation sites in the FAM171A2 gene linked to Parkinson’s disease, and screening 6,361 cerebrospinal fluid proteins to develop Alzheimer’s diagnostic tests that predict incidence up to 15 years in advance with over 98.7% accuracy.

Researchers in China now use platforms like “AI Kongming,” led by Guo Jinjiang, which can screen 100 million compounds within 48 hours using proprietary algorithms for rapid drug discovery.

Fan Xiangmin’s team at the Chinese Academy of Sciences developed an AI-driven rhythm system using bone-conduction headphones to help hemiplegic patients, now in clinical trials.

China’s National Health Commission and other departments issued guidelines in 2025 to promote AI tools for improving healthcare service quality.

Fan Xianqun, dean at Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, said that AI is rapidly expanding across medical research and clinical practice in China.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

AI diagnostics in China lack clear regulatory approval and real-world use

  • Reports tout 98.7% Alzheimer’s prediction accuracy, yet give no proof of National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) Class II or III registrations needed for clinical use 1.
  • Beyond pilots like rhythm-assistance trials or amblyopia glasses, there is no word on NMPA clearance, public insurance payment, or placement in standard care pathways for these tools 2.
  • In September 2025 NMPA approved 348 devices including AI imaging software, yet the piece lists no registration certificates for the named systems 3. That suggests they remain in research or pilots, not on the market.
  • Without confirmed clearance and reimbursement, the 15-year advance Alzheimer’s prediction reads as research promise rather than a service patients in China can use.

Vendors can tap reported 2025 national AI healthcare plans

  • Reports cite a November 2025 National AI Healthcare Strategy targeting AI support in most primary care by 2030, with CNY 15 to 20 billion over five years, which would lift demand for AI integration platforms 4.
  • Plans call for one nationwide hospital data system by 2027 4. That opens room for federated learning plus interoperability tools, with secure sharing aligned with China’s data and privacy laws.
  • Pilot rollouts start April 2026 in 50 hospitals plus 500 township clinics 5. MLOps providers can supply systems for deployment, validation, monitoring and updates that fit NMPA post-market surveillance rules for AI devices.
  • If executed as reported, a focus on the rural to urban gap means cloud AI diagnostics tuned for low bandwidth and township workflows could reach over 600 million rural residents 4.
