China unveils AI science system on national supercomputing network
China has launched a large-scale AI science system that connects to its national supercomputing network, enabling automated scientific research without constant human supervision.
The platform, rolled out on December 23, 2025, is accessible to more than 1,000 institutions in China and supports nearly 100 scientific workflows in areas such as materials science and biotechnology.
This move comes a month after US President Donald Trump announced the Genesis Mission, an initiative to use federal resources to develop advanced AI for scientific research with strict timelines for results.
China’s system operates on its National Supercomputing Network, integrating more than 30 supercomputing centers nationwide.
According to Chinese officials, the AI agent can handle complex research tasks, run simulations, analyze data, and generate scientific reports from simple commands.
Experts note that granting AI direct access to national supercomputing networks may speed up discoveries, but also raises concerns about data security and potential risks.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
China leads AI papers; public evidence limited
- China produces 29% of AI papers and claims 40.2% of citations 1. The US still leads on citations, and China passed the European Union (EU) in 2018 then topped the EU‑US total by 2022 1.
- Public reports say China’s new AI science system has not yet produced publicly cited peer‑reviewed papers and technical documentation or benchmarks that verify concrete discoveries. The platform links 30+ supercomputing centers and nearly 100 scientific workflows, so impact versus raw compute remains uncertain without public case studies or white papers.
- China leads in applied AI such as patents and clinical trials with 41.6% of global citations, yet breakthroughs include DeepMind’s AlphaFold (a protein‑structure prediction system) and Google’s GraphCast (a weather‑forecasting model) plus domestic systems 1.
HPC centers need AI agent governance and security
- HPC operators must fix security gaps, improve observability, and set governance for autonomous agents as AI agents gain supercomputing access.
- The Group of Seven (G7) Cyber Expert Group, advising G7 finance ministries plus central banks, warns about smarter malware plus automated attacks in finance plus urges governance and collaboration 2.
- Singapore’s Monetary Authority (Singapore’s central bank and financial regulator) asks financial firms to bolster governance and detection against AI‑driven threats 2. Beijing’s core AI industry output could exceed 450 billion yuan in 2025 3. The EU has committed over €2.6 billion to its AI Factories and Antennas initiative 2, which funds large AI compute sites plus regional access points, with 19 AI Factories in 16 Member States.
