China trusts AI far more than Western countries: survey
A new survey by Edelman found that trust in AI is much higher in China than in Western countries.
The poll showed 87% of Chinese respondents trusted AI, compared to 32% in the US, 36% in the UK, and 39% in Germany.
In Brazil, 67% of people said they trusted AI.
The survey also found that 54% of Chinese respondents supported greater use of AI, while only 17% of Americans felt the same.
Trust in AI was highest among people aged 18 to 34, with 88% in China and 40% in the US expressing confidence.
More than 70% of Chinese surveyed expected AI to help solve social issues such as climate change and poverty.
In the US, only a third believed AI would reduce poverty and polarization, and half predicted a positive climate impact.
The survey comes as US and Chinese firms continue to compete in developing advanced AI models.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
China–West trust gap cited amid thin methods in the coverage
- An Edelman poll puts AI trust at 87% in China and 32% in the US 1. The Al Jazeera write-up lacks sample sizes or question wording or representativeness, which blocks a bias check 1.
- Cross-border polling can run into social desirability effects (respondents giving answers they think are socially acceptable) and sampling gaps, so missing methods make any validity call shaky.
- The coverage omits year-over-year trends, which blocks any read on whether the gap holds or fades 1.
Low Western AI trust drives demand for third-party checks
- US 32% with UK 36% and Germany 39% create demand among AI vendors plus enterprise software operators for AI assurance (independent testing, auditing plus certification of AI systems) 12. Work should align to standards such as International Organization for Standardization/International Electrotechnical Commission (ISO/IEC) 42001, an AI management system standard.
- The UK market for AI assurance could grow from £1.01 billion Gross Value Added (GVA) in 2024 to over £18.8 billion GVA by 2035 which gives investors room to back certification platforms or ethics auditing tools or secure testing labs 2.
- AI agent platform builders (companies developing software that coordinates autonomous AI agents to perform multi-step tasks) that sell to Western enterprises should ship clear transparency features, then partner with new audit firms to stand out where trust concerns slow adoption 2.
