China to issue first overseas yuan green bonds

China’s Ministry of Finance will issue yuan-denominated green bonds in London, marking its first such issuance outside its borders.

The bonds, valued at up to 6 billion yuan (US$829.75 million), will fund environmentally sustainable projects. Specific details will be announced later.

This move follows commitments made during the UK-China Economic and Financial Dialogue in January. The dialogue included agreements on advancing sovereign green financing frameworks.

Experts believe the issuance could attract international investors to China’s financial markets and strengthen the yuan’s global role. It also aligns with China’s sustainability goals and meets Europe’s growing demand for green financial products.
