China bans hidden EV door handles over safety risks
China has announced a ban on concealed car door handles for electric vehicles, effective January 1, 2027, with a transition period until January 2029 for models already in final approval stages.
The new safety regulations, issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, require vehicles to have mechanical release mechanisms both inside and outside the car.
The move follows incidents in China where power failures allegedly prevented doors from opening, leading to fatalities.
The regulation also set minimum design requirements including a recessed exterior handle at least 6 centimeters by 2 centimeters and interior signage no smaller than 1 centimeter by 0.7 centimeters.
