China to allow Nvidia H200 sales to selected AI firms
China plans to let selected AI companies, including Alibaba Group Holding, ByteDance, and DeepSeek, buy limited numbers of Nvidia H200 chips, with total approvals potentially staying below 200,000 units.
The move would follow a US policy reversal, which set conditions for legal H200 exports, including technical review, supply safeguards, and customer security commitments.
Beijing had moved cautiously amid concerns that wider imports of US-designed AI chips could hurt China’s domestic chip industry and pose cybersecurity risks.
Chinese regulators had also scrutinized Nvidia’s China-focused H20 chip.
The H200 was Nvidia’s most powerful AI chip, helping explain demand as Chinese AI developers seek more computing power for training.
In May, Nvidia CFO Colette Kress said H200 chips had yet to generate any revenue in China because the company was uncertain whether imports would be allowed.
