China tests mass production of new advanced EV batteries

China’s first high-capacity all-solid-state battery production line has begun small batch tests, marking a step toward wider adoption of the technology in the EV sector.

The line, built by automaker GAC Group, can produce batteries above 60 ampere-hours, a threshold considered suitable for vehicles.

Most current batteries for vehicles have capacities of 20 to 40 ampere-hours.

Chinese authorities are reportedly preparing more policy and financial support to boost research and development of all-solid-state batteries.

These batteries are seen as a potential upgrade over lithium-ion batteries, with possible benefits in energy density, safety, and charging speed.

GAC plans small-batch vehicle tests by 2026, with gradual mass production between 2027 and 2030.

BYD, China’s largest EV maker, aims to start small-scale production of sulfide-based all-solid-state batteries by 2027, and to use them in mainstream models by 2030.

Industry insiders expect small-batch installation in EVs to start as early as 2027, but broad commercialization may not begin until after 2030.

GAC’s 60 Ah claim lacks independent validation of true solid-state architecture

  •  GAC’s pilot line makes 60+ Ah cells with 7.7 mAh/cm² areal capacity (charge per unit electrode area), but no independent validation appears in reporting 1. It describes a hybrid solid-state electrolyte of oxides and sulfides (ceramic ion conductors) 2, yet no third-party data confirms residual liquid, and some polymer-composites still keep around 3% 3.

Equipment vendors can target China’s 2026-2027 pilot line build-out window
