China tech stocks outperform as interest grows in OpenClaw AI

Chinese tech stocks held up better than regional and US peers as markets reacted to the US-Iran conflict and an AI-driven sell-off, while investor interest grew in the open-source agent OpenClaw.

The MSCI China Tech 100 eased 1% while the Stoxx Asia Technology 100 fell 10%, and the Nasdaq 100 dropped 2.3%.

Lower valuations helped shield Chinese tech firms from the market shocks, JPMorgan Asset Management portfolio manager, Oliver Cox said.

OpenClaw has been integrated into platforms at Tencent, Alibaba, and ByteDance.

Analysts including Charu Chanana of Saxo Markets and Vey-Sern Ling of UBP warned risks remain, including earnings quality and AI commoditization.

Cox said rising AI demand supports a stronger outlook for Asian tech.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

A grassroots movement is fueling China’s AI agent adoption

  • OpenClaw has spread through a user-led craze called “raising the lobster,” named after its logo 1.
  • Nearly 1,000 everyday users queued at Tencent’s headquarters in Shenzhen to get help setting it up 1.
  • Cloud providers including Tencent Holdings and ByteDance now offer free installs, since the tricky setup can pull customers onto their cloud services 2.
  • Government backing is also growing. Shenzhen’s Longgang district offers grants of up to 10 million yuan (about $1.4 million) for companies building OpenClaw apps 1.

AI agents are challenging the walled gardens of China’s superapps

  • Security and data worries tie into a broader fight between AI agents and the business models of China’s internet platforms 3.
  • Before OpenClaw, a ByteDance-ZTE (Zhongxing Telecommunications Equipment, a major Chinese telecom equipment maker) AI smartphone with an embedded AI agent, the Doubao AI phone, ran into blocks from WeChat, Taobao, and Alipay 4.
  • The embedded agent could run with elevated system-level permissions, framed as a “master key” 4.
  • That access can read screens and operate across apps without standard app cooperation. It raises data-security concerns and threatens platform control over user traffic 4.
  • The dispute has kicked off debate about data ownership, plus guardrails and regulation around data security and privacy 4, 5. Draft rules on human-like AI interaction services remain a separate regulatory track 4, 5.
