China starts two-year trial of IoT satellite services

China has started a two-year commercial trial of satellite internet of things (IoT) services, announced at the 2025 China 5G + Industrial Internet Conference in Wuhan on Nov. 21.

The trial allows approved firms to offer satellite IoT services under existing laws and regulations.

The initiative is expected to expand the satellite communication market and support sectors such as commercial aerospace and the low-altitude economy.

Satellite IoT uses satellites to connect large numbers of devices on land, sea, and air, enabling data collection and transmission for industries like marine fisheries, logistics, energy, emergency communications, and industrial internet.

The commercial trial follows policy guidance released in August 2025 by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology to ease market entry and promote growth in satellite communication.

China has reported progress in building satellite constellations and related technologies in 2025.

  • IoT device manufacturers plus systems integrators should find leading China-based satellite IoT module suppliers. They should pursue certification aligned with 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) NB-IoT-over-NTN standards 5. That positions them to win demand across logistics, energy, and emergency communications targeted by the trial.
