China reportedly drafts purchase rules for Nvidia H200 chips

China is working on new rules to control how many advanced AI chips local firms can buy from foreign suppliers such as Nvidia, according to Nikkei Asia.

The rules, reported by sources familiar with the matter, would regulate the total volume of cutting-edge chips that companies in China can purchase, allowing some imports instead of a full ban.

This development comes after the Trump administration recently approved sales of Nvidia’s H200 chips to China.

Some US lawmakers and former officials have criticized the move, saying it could weaken the US advantage in AI and boost China’s military capabilities.
