China regulator calls out Alibaba, Meituan, JD.com on fair play

China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) held a meeting on July 18, with major food delivery platforms, including Ele.me, Meituan, and JD.com.

The regulator called for rational competition after months of intense price wars and heavy discount campaigns.

It emphasized compliance with ecommerce, anti-unfair competition, and food safety laws.

The SAMR urged platforms to build a balanced ecosystem that benefits consumers, merchants, delivery workers, and operators.

On the same day, it also addressed food safety concerns related to live-streaming ecommerce.

Some food items sold during live streams were found to contain excessive additives or pesticide residues.

Influencer agencies and representatives from live-streaming platforms attended the meeting.

These meetings reflect the regulator’s push to ensure fair practices and improve safety in China’s fast-growing digital economy.
