US, China reach deal to keep TikTok operating
United States President Donald Trump said on September 16, 2025 that an agreement has been reached to keep TikTok operating in the US, pending the transfer of its American assets from China’s ByteDance to US owners.
TikTok, a short-form video app with 170 million US users, has faced pressure from Washington over concerns that its Chinese ownership could threaten national security.
The deal, which is similar to one discussed earlier in the year, would see ByteDance retain up to a 19.9% stake, just below the legal threshold requiring divestiture.
The deadline for completing the transaction has been extended by 90 days to December 16, 2025 after previously being set for September 17, 2025.
Sources said the US-based TikTok entity will have a board dominated by Americans, with one member appointed by the US government.
