China pushes tech drive with 5-year AI, chip plan
China is drafting its 15th five-year plan, which will guide the country’s development in science and technology from 2026 to 2030.
Officials say the next five years are critical for China’s goal to become a global leader in science and technology by 2035, with emphasis on fields such as semiconductors and AI.
National R&D investment rose 48% from 2020, and China now ranks 10th in the Global Innovation Index.
China has increased its output of high-impact research and patent filings, but US-led export controls continue to limit access to advanced chip manufacturing technology.
Experts say China is self-sufficient in mature chip process nodes but still relies on foreign firms for high-end equipment and advanced processes.
Industry officials said the new plan will prioritize AI integration across industries, including robots, smart vehicles, and next-generation manufacturing.
