China, a leading producer of lithium – a key component for EV batteries – faces supply challenges, with the International Energy Agency estimating that only 50% of global lithium demand will be met by 2035.
Chinese officials consider the measure a reasonable regulatory step to maintain control over critical mineral processing, which accounts for 70% of global lithium processing.
The proposal follows recent export bans in response to United States restrictions and could affect China’s influence over the global battery supply chain, despite potential obstacles for domestic EV companies.
