China plans fivefold boost in advanced chips for AI development
China aims to increase its advanced semiconductor production capacity fivefold within 1–2 years to support domestic AI chip development, according to Nikkei Asia.
The country plans to boost monthly wafer output below 7 nanometers from 20,000 to 100,000 wafers. Major foundries like SMIC and Huahong Semiconductor are expanding or building new facilities for 7- and 5-nanometer chips.
The Chinese government is expected to allocate increased capacity primarily to domestic AI firms such as Huawei, Cambricon, and Alibaba’s T-Head. Despite these efforts, China faces challenges importing advanced semiconductor equipment from the US and allies, with domestic equipment still lagging behind foreign counterparts.
