China Mobile Hong Kong trials U6G for next-gen networks

China Mobile Hong Kong, the Hong Kong telecom unit of China Mobile, said it has tested an Upper 6GHz mobile network at its Mong Kok flagship store, an early step toward using the band for next-generation mobile services in the city.

Hong Kong auctioned the spectrum for public mobile services on November 29, 2024. The company said it won 100MHz of contiguous spectrum, which it can combine with its existing holdings to increase network capacity for data-heavy uses such as high-definition video and AI-connected devices.

The test comes as the 6GHz band draws interest for mobile broadband capacity.

At the same time, 3GPP, the 3rd Generation Partnership Project, has completed specifications for licensed Upper 6GHz 5G, and band n104 has been validated for 5G-Advanced.

Hong Kong’s move also comes as spectrum policies diverge. The US has opened 1,200MHz of 6GHz for unlicensed Wi-Fi instead of licensed mobile services.
