China launches world’s largest driverless mining truck fleet
Chinese state-backed energy giant Huaneng Group has launched the world’s largest fleet of unmanned electric mining trucks in Inner Mongolia.
The fleet, named Huaneng Ruichi, consists of 100 vehicles equipped with autonomous driving systems developed by Huawei Technologies.
The trucks utilize technologies such as 5G-A communications, AI, cloud computing, smart battery swapping, and high-accuracy mapping. They are designed to autonomously load, unload, and transport mining materials, even in harsh weather conditions.
The project was developed in collaboration with Xuzhou Construction Machinery Group and the Beijing University of Science and Technology.
According to Li Shuxue, chairman of Huaneng Mengdong, the unmanned trucks are expected to enhance transport efficiency by 20% compared to traditional manned vehicles.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ China’s autonomous mining leadership aligns with broader AI industrial strategy
Huaneng’s deployment of 100 autonomous mining trucks represents the latest advancement in China’s systematic approach to industrial AI transformation.
This initiative is part of China’s $70+ billion AI industry ecosystem that includes more than 4,300 companies driving innovation across traditional sectors 1.
The autonomous mining project showcases China’s strategic advantage in deploying advanced technologies at scale, as evidenced by their leadership position in autonomous truck implementation globally 2.
The integration of multiple technologies, including 5G-A communications, AI, cloud computing, and smart battery swapping, reflects China’s emphasis on comprehensive technological solutions rather than incremental improvements.
This approach aligns with the country’s broader industrial policy of balancing innovation with practical implementation, creating tangible productivity gains while building domestic technological capabilities.
2️⃣ Mining sector experiencing rapid automation after lagging in digital adoption
The 100-truck autonomous fleet represents a significant acceleration in mining automation, particularly notable because the mining industry has traditionally been slow to digitalize.
A survey by Ernst and Young found that only 10% of mining companies were on the digital transformation path, indicating substantial remaining potential for technological advancement in the sector 3.
