China launches first commercial underwater data center in Hainan

China has launched the world’s first commercial underwater data center in Lingshui, Hainan, as part of efforts to grow the island’s blue economy and attract foreign investment.

The facility, managed by Shenzhen HiCloud Data Centre Technology, houses servers in a 1,300-ton data cabin located 35 meters underwater.

Each cabin can hold 24 server racks with capacity for 400 to 500 servers.

Seawater is used for cooling, which the company said can help reduce energy consumption compared to land-based data centres.

Hainan’s five-year plan includes a target of 100 underwater data cabins in the province.

The new center in Hainan is part of broader efforts to advance technology and digital infrastructure in China.
