China’s Ministry of Commerce and seven other government departments released implementation guidelines on June 18 with 17 measures to speed up “AI plus consumption.”

The measures are part of a broader push to use AI to stimulate consumer spending through smarter products, services, and consumption scenarios.

The plan calls for more AI products and upgrades to consumer electronics, household appliances, and home goods.

It also aims to expand the market for smart wearables and increase the use of AI-powered robots for elderly care, companionship, and daily assistance.

It also encourages broader AI use in home services, elderly care, tourism, accommodation, catering, education, retail, ecommerce, and logistics networks serving counties, townships, and villages.

The guidelines also support the development of AI consumption clusters and experience centers.

They encourage wider rental, sharing, and trial use of AI products in public venues, as well as potential local subsidies for next-generation smart terminals and other AI-related consumer products under existing trade-in programs.
