Chinese gaming billionaire plans $2b investment in next-genAI

Chen Tianqiao, founder of Shanda Group, said he and Shanda plan to invest more than US$2 billion to develop “discoverative AI,” his term for AI integrating long-term memory, causal reasoning, and predictive modelling beyond current large language models.

Shanda Group began as a Chinese online games company, previously called Shanda Interactive Entertainment, and now operates as a technology investment platform.

Chen, who made his fortune in the early 2000s and later took Shanda private, said he committed US$1 billion to brain research and invested in brain-computer interface technology.

He said he plans a pilot computing facility with several megawatts of capacity, expects initial costs of US$300 million to US$500 million, and intends to use his roughly 700,000 acres of timberland in Oregon and Ontario to help secure uninterrupted, clean power, including researching geothermal energy.

Chen said he is testing the technology for applications from drug discovery to forecasting investments and geopolitical events, and that profit is not an immediate priority.
