China eyes nuclear power to fuel growing AI demand

China is studying nuclear power for AI infrastructure as demand for steady electricity rises, as Linglong One, small modular reactor in Hainan, is 90% installed and plans to begin commercial operations this year.

The company is also exploring a nuclear-powered industrial park in Changjiang county, and said Linglong One could generate 1 billion kilowatt-hours a year.

The move aligns with China’s 2026 policy push to better match computing growth with electricity supply, as domestic AI usage continues to surge.
