China EV charging network nears 22 million facilities
China’s EV charging network reached 21.96 million facilities by end-April 2026, up 47.4% from a year earlier.
The country is expanding its infrastructure to support wider electric vehicle adoption, according to data released on May 21 by the National Energy Administration in Beijing.
Public charging facilities totaled 4.91 million, a 29.6% year-on-year rise, and their combined capacity reached 237 million kilowatts.
China in October 2025 issued a three-year plan that targets 28 million charging facilities nationwide and more than 300 million kilowatts of public charging capacity by the end of 2027.

China’s charging network relies heavily on private units
- Most of the 21.96 million chargers are private units, usually slower alternating current (AC) equipment installed at homes or workplaces 1.
- That broad base supports routine charging for many EV owners. Public charger totals can miss much of that support for EV adoption 2.
The network is pushing the grid with ultra-fast charging and energy storage
- Its size is speeding up ultra-fast charging while putting more strain on the grid. One study found that adding 2,000 ultra-fast charging stations in one city could raise the daily peak-to-valley gap in public charging load by up to 31.61% versus baseline cases 3.
- The same study found that energy storage systems can smooth short swings in load. It also found that they may worsen brief demand spikes when prices shift from high to low 3.
- As China moves toward its 2027 charging goals, officials and grid operators will need to weigh faster rollout against power-system stability 13.
