China EV battery giants power push into green shipbuilding

China’s top EV battery producers, CATL and Gotion High-tech, are supplying batteries for new electric-powered ships as China pushes to expand green shipbuilding.

CATL said its first self-developed pure electric vessel will begin ocean operations within three years.

Gotion, backed by Volkswagen, said its battery packs can power a 132-container ship that has received certification from the China Classification Society.

Chinese shipbuilders held 65% of global shipbuilding orders by deadweight tonnage in the first three quarters of 2025, according to Clarksons.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Battery-electric ships stay niche despite CATL and Gotion wins

  • CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited) is the world’s largest EV battery maker and supplies batteries for electric ships. Gotion High-tech, a Chinese battery maker backed by Volkswagen Group, also supplies. DNV (a maritime classification and risk advisory firm) logged no battery-electric vessels in H1 2025 1. LNG led with 87 ships at 14.2 million GT, methanol 40 at 4.6 million GT, ammonia and hydrogen seven.
  • Puffer Fish Blue 01, a 132-container ship, remains a pilot project. 81 LNG-fueled container ships, at 13.6 million GT, picked gas over batteries 1.
  • Range and energy density constraints cap battery-electric propulsion, keeping to short-sea routes (coastal and inland). Long-haul shipping needs fuels like LNG and methanol for multi-day voyages 1.

Asian port electrification creates openings for energy system integrators

  • As battery-electric ships enter service, Asian ports will need megawatt-scale charging and energy management systems. Port equipment suppliers, electrical engineering firms, and maritime software providers can track Chinese port tenders for timing.
  • Thirteen LNG bunkering (refueling) ships were ordered in H1 2025, compared with 62 in service worldwide. Shore-power charging (plugging ships into the grid at berth) will likely follow as electric ships scale 1.
  • Technology investors can target companies building marine battery management and grid-to-ship charging solutions (high-capacity connections from the power grid to moored vessels). China holds 65% of the shipbuilding orderbook and leads EV battery production, which positions it to set electrification standards with global reach.
