China denies US trade talks
China’s Ministry of Commerce announced on April 24, 2024 that there are no active trade negotiations with the United States.
This counters recent statements from the White House regarding potential easing of trade tensions.
“There are no negotiations on the economy and trade between China and the US at present,” said He Yadong, spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce, during a press briefing.
He rejected claims of progress in bilateral discussions and reiterated that the US should eliminate its unilateral measures against China to address existing issues.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Global trade patterns shift as businesses adapt to tariff pressures
The current US-China trade tensions have already reshaped global trade flows, revealing how international commerce adapts to policy shocks.
US reliance on Chinese imports has dropped significantly, falling from 21% of total US imports in 2016 to just 13% in 2024, demonstrating a substantial shift in sourcing patterns 1.
This decline hasn’t necessarily meant reduced global trade, as countries like Vietnam, Thailand, and Mexico have rapidly increased their production and exports of goods subject to tariffs between the US and China 2.
Many Chinese exporters are now diversifying operations to these neighboring countries to mitigate tariff impacts, though this adaptation comes with increased costs that will likely reach consumers 3.
Analysts have observed Chinese goods being rerouted through Southeast Asian countries to evade tariffs, creating complex new supply chain arrangements rather than simply eliminating trade 1.
These shifts suggest the trade conflict is transforming globalization rather than reversing it, with trade patterns redistributing globally instead of disappearing entirely 2.
2️⃣ Economic impacts extend far beyond political rhetoric
The concrete economic stakes of this trade confrontation are substantial for both nations and their citizens, with measurable impacts already occurring.
The US trade deficit with China stood at approximately $295 billion in 2024, representing a significant economic interdependency despite years of previous tariffs 1.
