China builds 252-meter diameter giant floating wind turbine
China has completed assembly of the world’s largest single-unit floating offshore wind power system in Beihai, Guangxi, according to Science and Technology Daily.
All major components of the 16-megawatt system, including mooring cables and turbine gearboxes, were made in China.
The turbine’s rotor has a 252-meter diameter and is expected to generate about 44.7 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.
The system will next be towed to waters deeper than 50 meters for installation and testing before grid connection and commercial use.
The project is led by China Three Gorges Corporation, a state-owned hydropower developer.
The platform features China’s first dynamic ballast system, which adjusts to wind and wave conditions to reduce tilt and improve efficiency.
China added more than 4.4 GW of offshore wind capacity in the first half of 2025, matching its total for all of 2024, according to Global Energy Monitor.
