Chinese AI chipmakers MetaX, Iluvatar swing to profit
Chinese AI chipmakers MetaX and Iluvatar turned profitable in the first half of 2026.
Meanwhile Biren Technology remained loss-making but sharply narrowed its deficit, showing uneven gains from Beijing’s push for semiconductor self-reliance and AI infrastructure.
MetaX, a Shanghai-listed graphics processing unit (GPU) designer founded in 2020, reported a net profit of 612 million yuan (US$91.1 million), compared with a 186 million yuan (US$27.7 million) loss a year earlier, as revenue rose 44.7% to 1.3 billion yuan (US$196 million).
Iluvatar, a Chinese GPU developer listed in Hong Kong, reported a net profit of 106 million yuan (US$15.8 million), compared with a 609 million yuan (US$90.6 million) loss, while revenue rose more than 191% to 945.7 million yuan (US$141 million).
Hong Kong-listed Biren, a Chinese AI chip designer, reported a 377 million yuan (US$56.1 million) net loss, compared with 1.6 billion yuan (US$238 million) a year earlier.
Its revenue climbed nearly 1,998% to 1.2 billion yuan (US$185 million), exceeding the company’s full-year 2025 total.
