China accuses US of $13b bitcoin hack

China’s cybersecurity agency has accused the US government of orchestrating the theft of US$13 billion in bitcoin from the LuBian mining pool.

The Chinese National Computer Virus Emergency Response Center called the 2020 hack a “state-level hacker operation,” citing patterns in how the stolen bitcoin was moved.

The agency’s report links the 127,272 stolen bitcoin tokens to assets later confiscated by the US government, which said the tokens were associated with Chen Zhi, chairman of Cambodia’s Prince Group.

Chen was charged by US authorities with wire fraud and money laundering in October, but US officials have not disclosed details on when or how the bitcoin was seized.
