Chevron said to plan US natural gas data centers by 2028

Chevron is advancing plans to build natural gas-powered data centers, with permitting and engineering underway for multiple US sites, according to a company executive.

The facilities aim to generate 1 gigawatt (GW) of power by 2027 or 2028, addressing the growing energy demand from AI and cloud computing.

These data centers will operate independently from the grid, relying mainly on natural gas, with some sites being evaluated for carbon capture or renewable energy elements.

Chevron is focusing on locations in the southern US, the western interior, and the Midwest but has not disclosed specific sites or customers.

The company has ordered seven gas turbines from GE Vernova, set for delivery in 2026, to support these projects.

Natural gas remains a preferred energy source due to its availability, cost efficiency, and faster construction timelines compared to nuclear plants.
