OpenAI’s ChatGPT reached 1 billion monthly app users in May, according to market intelligence firm Sensor Tower.

Sensor Tower said ChatGPT remained the largest AI app by monthly users even as rivals expanded faster over the past year.

Sensor Tower said Anthropic’s Claude rose 640% year on year and Meta AI 973%, versus 62% for ChatGPT.

The 1 billion figure appears to refer to mobile app activity rather than web traffic, because Sensor Tower tracks separately app engagement and web audiences.

That makes the milestone notable but distinct from ChatGPT’s original November 2022 launch.

The web chatbot came first, while the official iPhone app launched in May 2023, and the Android version became available on July 25, 2023.

A Boston Consulting Group poll showed 74% of about 12,000 frontline workers used AI regularly as of June 3, up 23 percentage points from a year earlier.
