ChatGPT market share slips below 50%
OpenAI’s ChatGPT held 46.4% of the global AI assistant market at the end of May 2026, down from more than 50% in January, according to analytics firm Sensor Tower.
Sensor Tower said its “True Audience” measure counts unique users across mobile apps and the web.
The firm said ChatGPT remained the market leader with more than 1.1 billion monthly users, followed by Google’s Gemini with 662 million and Anthropic’s Claude with 245 million.
xAI’s Grok, Perplexity, DeepSeek, and Meta AI each held less than 5% market share.
Sensor Tower estimated AI apps would reach nearly 2.3 billion downloads and more than US$4.2 billion in spending in the first half of 2026, up from US$1.83 billion a year earlier, although growth in downloads and spending had slowed.
Asia recorded a 3.3% drop in AI app downloads in Q1 2026, the region’s first decline, driven by China and India.
In China, Apple removed more than 100 ChatGPT-like apps ahead of tighter generative AI rules in 2023, which may have constrained one of Asia’s largest markets.
Gemini’s gains were also helped by its integration with Google’s ecosystem. Gemini can be set as the default digital assistant on Android 16 devices.
