ChatGPT introduces global group chat feature
OpenAI has introduced group chat features in ChatGPT, allowing users to collaborate with others and the AI in a single conversation.
The feature is being rolled out to all logged-in users across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans globally, after a pilot in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan.
Users can add up to 20 people to a group chat by sharing a link, and group chats are kept separate from private conversations.
ChatGPT in group chats operates with GPT‑5.1 Auto, and offers tools like search, image generation, and file uploads.
OpenAI said group chats include privacy features, and personal ChatGPT memories are not shared or created in these group settings.
Special safeguards are in place for users under 18, including reduced exposure to sensitive content, and parental controls.
OpenAI plans to refine the feature as more users start using group chats.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Enterprise rollout remains unclear despite consumer availability
- The announcement does not say whether group chats work in ChatGPT Team (a business workspace), Enterprise (a company-wide deployment) or Edu (an education-focused plan) 1. This leaves teams unsure about collaboration.
- Missing admin controls hinder planning 1. Teams need to disable group chats or audit conversations. They need retention settings or a data training opt out.
- Firms that pick ChatGPT as their AI hub and pay for upgrades need controls to roll out group chats without extra risk 2.
- If audit logs or eDiscovery (electronic discovery used to collect and search digital records for legal or compliance matters) are not available, regulated sectors will struggle to adopt it even with collaboration gains.
Compliance vendors can build tools for group chat oversight
- Group chats will spur third-party tools. They can archive conversations and route transcripts to systems like Slack, Jira or Salesforce, with data loss prevention.
- Some security platforms tackle access gaps in ChatGPT, like member invites that skip admin approval in Team plans 2. They can add group chat monitoring and risk classification.
- Tools like Reco (a data security platform) spot sensitive data in prompts and outputs across SaaS platforms (Software as a Service) 3. They could cover group chats if OpenAI offers export Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) or webhooks (automated callbacks that send data to other systems in real time).
- This only works if OpenAI gives programmatic access to group chat content 45. Individual accounts support data export in Settings. Team workspaces do not 45.
