ChatGPT eyes AI partnership with Reliance Jio in India

OpenAI was earlier reported to be in talks with Reliance Jio to distribute ChatGPT in India.

Although no deal has been confirmed, the company is now seeking its own Jio moment by targeting India’s billion internet users with affordable plans.

The company has now launched a new subscription tier, ChatGPT Go, priced at 399 rupee (US$4.58) per month to target India’s growing internet market.

OpenAI users in India can now pay in rupees and use the Unified Payment Interface (UPI), a move designed to improve accessibility.

India is ChatGPT’s second-biggest market by users and its largest by app installs, but OpenAI faces competition from Gemini and Perplexity.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ India’s price-sensitive market drives global tech companies toward localized strategies

OpenAI’s launch of ChatGPT Go represents the first time the company has created geography-specific pricing, highlighting India’s unique position in the global AI market.

Despite India being ChatGPT’s largest market by downloads at 13.7% of lifetime installs compared to the US at 10.3%, it ranks only as the second-biggest revenue market1. This disparity signals significant price sensitivity that the previous $20 Plus plan couldn’t address effectively.

The Rs 399 pricing sits strategically between free and premium tiers, targeting India’s expanding middle class while the inclusion of UPI payments and rupee billing removes traditional friction points for local users.

This localization approach reflects broader recognition of India’s massive scale opportunity, with the AI market projected to reach $11.8 billion by 2025 and potentially contribute over $950 billion to the Indian economy by 20352.

2️⃣ Government infrastructure investment creates favorable conditions for AI adoption

OpenAI’s timing aligns with substantial government backing for AI development across India.

The Indian government launched the IndiaAI mission with a budget of ₹10,300 crores (approximately $1.3 billion) specifically to build AI infrastructure and skill ecosystems over five years2.

This represents a significant shift from earlier challenges identified in 2018, when experts noted insufficient infrastructure and workforce as major barriers to AI adoption3.
