ChatGPT app suggestions spark ad concerns among users

OpenAI faced criticism after ChatGPT suggested users install the Peloton app during unrelated conversations, sparking concerns that ads were being introduced to the paid version of the service.

ChatGPT users, including subscribers to the US$200 per month Pro Plan, reported seeing app recommendations such as Peloton and Spotify even when discussions had no connection to those apps.

OpenAI said the feature was not an ad but part of ongoing tests to let ChatGPT suggest apps within chats, with no financial incentive tied to the recommendations.

Daniel McAuley, who leads data for ChatGPT, acknowledged the suggestions were sometimes irrelevant and said the company is working to improve the experience.

A spokesperson confirmed the feature is part of a pilot, after OpenAI’s October announcement about integrating third-party apps into ChatGPT.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

OpenAI’s app suggestion rules stay unclear amid user concerns

  • OpenAI has not explained how ChatGPT picks app recommendations, when suggestions trigger, or which ranking rules set visibility. That makes it hard to judge if the feature acts like advertising despite OpenAI denying financial incentives.
  • The pilot gives no consent controls, and ChatGPT subscribers cannot opt out of app suggestions, which raises questions about whether OpenAI follows its principle that “apps should respect user intent” 1.
  • OpenAI’s app developer guidelines forbid apps from pushing users away from other apps or interfering with discovery 1, yet the rules do not cover how OpenAI promotes apps inside ChatGPT, which creates an asymmetry with third-party promotion limits.

Developers can reach users through ChatGPT’s app system for Large Language Model (LLM) tools

  • Software teams can use the Apps Software Development Kit (SDK) to build and list ChatGPT-compatible apps 12. ChatGPT is turning into a discovery channel. Each app needs a “clear purpose” with “originality” and “reliable functionality”. Names or descriptions must be “clear and accurate” 1.
  • Run stability tests and use transparent authentication flows. Provide screenshots that match real functionality, and publish a privacy policy that explains data collection 1. After listing, OpenAI locks tool names, signatures and descriptions, so tune metadata before launch 1.
  • OpenAI has not announced monetization policies. It said details will come when the submission review process opens 1. Early integration can help developers win users as ChatGPT’s app system grows, similar to early App Store advantages.
