US CFTC opens door to crypto perpetual futures
The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission said on May 29 that crypto perpetual futures, derivatives without expiry dates, could trade on registered US platforms if they meet conditions for 24/7 trading, clearing, and settlement.
In a separate policy statement, the regulator said it will review each contract case by case. CFTC staff also said crypto-linked derivatives may be better suited to round-the-clock trading than products such as agricultural commodities.
Kalshi, a US-based prediction market operator, said the CFTC had approved it to offer crypto perpetual futures on its platform, which it said would be fully regulated by the agency.
Kalshi said it aims to launch contracts tied to more than a dozen cryptocurrencies, pending regulatory reviews, and that agricultural commodities would not be part of the offering.
The decision could open a US-regulated route for a product that has so far traded mostly on offshore venues.
