CEO Tim Cook says Apple ready to spend big on AI

Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company is prepared to increase spending on AI and data centers to compete with tech rivals.

Following its Q3 earnings, Cook noted Apple is open to acquiring larger firms if it accelerates its AI goals.

In 2024, Apple has acquired seven smaller companies, continuing its history of targeted acquisitions.

Apple’s AI strategy has included developing in-house improvements to its Siri voice assistant, though some features have been delayed.

The company has also partnered with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into certain iPhone features.

Apple’s chief financial officer said spending on data centers will increase substantially, driven by AI-related investments, but did not specify amounts.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Apple’s willingness to consider larger acquisitions marks a strategic shift from decades of conservative deal-making

Cook’s openness to buying “larger” companies represents a notable departure from Apple’s historically cautious acquisition approach.

The company’s largest deal ever was its $3 billion purchase of Beats Electronics in 2014, followed by a $1 billion acquisition of Intel’s modem chip business1. Most of Apple’s AI-related purchases have been much smaller, like the $200 million acquisition of machine learning startup Turi in 201623.

This conservative approach contrasts sharply with Apple’s current AI predicament, where competitors like Google and Microsoft have built commanding leads through both massive internal spending and strategic acquisitions.

Apple’s traditional preference for acquiring “smaller firms with highly specialized technical teams” worked well for incremental product improvements, but may be insufficient for the scale of AI transformation now required across its ecosystem.

2️⃣ Despite increased spending commitments, Apple’s AI investment still appears modest compared to its rivals’ massive outlays

Apple’s promise to “substantially” increase AI spending comes against a backdrop of competitors making unprecedented financial commitments to the technology.

Google is planning to spend $85 billion over the next year while Microsoft is on track to spend more than $100 billion, mostly on data centers[original article]. Meanwhile, Apple’s $500 billion investment plan over four years covers all U.S. operations, not just AI infrastructure45.
