CATL unveils new battery variants to attract Europe’s EV market
Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL) introduced two new battery models aimed at Europe’s EV market, presenting them in Munich ahead of the IAA Mobility auto show.
CATL, a Chinese battery maker, introduced lithium iron phosphate batteries offering either a 758-kilometer range and a 12-year lifespan, or fast-charging that adds 478 kilometers in 10 minutes, with one version designed for better performance in low temperatures.
The company said the longer lifespan battery is attractive for leasing fleets.
CATL has invested over €11 billion (US$12.9 billion) in Europe, with factories in Germany, Hungary, and Spain, and plans to soon open its first European after-sales service center in Eindhoven, Netherlands, for battery inspection, maintenance, and recycling.
The company accounted for over a third of global battery deliveries last year, with Europe’s EV sales up 26% in the first seven months of 2025.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
CATL’s massive European investment reflects strategic shift toward localized production
- The company has committed over €11 billion to European operations, including factories in Germany, Hungary, and Spain, demonstrating unprecedented scale for a Chinese battery manufacturer’s overseas expansion1.
- CATL’s Hungarian facility, expected to start production by early 2026 with 100 GWh annual capacity, represents a significant step toward meeting EU goals for battery independence and reducing reliance on Chinese imports23.
- Despite holding 37.5% of the global EV battery market share, CATL currently captures only 22% of the European market, trailing LG Energy Solution, indicating growth potential in the region45.
- This localization strategy positions CATL to capitalize on Europe’s growing EV market, which saw 26% sales growth in the first seven months of the year and represents nearly 18% of global EV sales15.
Battery technology differentiation targets distinct European consumer preferences
- CATL’s two new battery variants address specific market segments: one offers 758-kilometer range with 12-year lifespan targeting the leasing sector, while the other enables 478-kilometer range after just 10 minutes of charging1.
- The focus on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) technology provides cost advantages in a European market that currently relies heavily on more expensive nickel-based batteries, which account for a significant portion of deployed capacity5.
- This product strategy directly addresses range anxiety and charging speed concerns that remain primary barriers to EV adoption among European consumers, potentially accelerating market penetration4.
