CATL unveils 5-minute charger with 520 km range

Chinese battery manufacturer CATL has introduced its second generation “Shenxing” fast-charging battery.

It is expected to power over 67 electric vehicle models this year.

According to Gao Huan, CATL’s chief technology officer, the new Shenxing battery provides a driving range of 520 kilometers with just a five-minute charge.

It can also reach 80% charge from 0% in 15 minutes.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ CATL’s fast-charging innovations continue a long-term technological roadmap

The new Shenxing battery represents the latest milestone in CATL’s systematic battery evolution that began years ago with clear performance targets.

In 2019, CATL had already announced ultra-fast charging capabilities enabling 80% charge in 15 minutes, showing this latest generation builds on half a decade of focused R&D 1.

The company set ambitious energy density goals in 2019, targeting an increase from 240 Wh/kg to 350 Wh/kg by 2024, which contextualizes the new sodium battery’s 175 Wh/kg density as part of a broader technology strategy 1.

CATL’s cell-to-pack (CTP) technology introduction in 2019 eliminated battery modules by integrating cells directly into packs, increasing mass-energy density by 10-15% and improving volume utilization by 15-20%. These foundational innovations contributed to today’s performance breakthroughs 1.

This systematic approach has helped CATL maintain its position as the world’s largest automotive lithium-ion battery maker, with significant partnerships across major automotive manufacturers like BMW, Volkswagen, and Toyota 1.

2️⃣ China’s brutal EV price war squeezes battery makers’ margins despite technological advances

CATL’s slowing profit growth (15% in 2024, its lowest in six years) reflects the intense competitive pressure in China’s EV market, where manufacturers are sacrificing margins to gain market share 2.

The price war has created a cascade effect through the supply chain, with major manufacturers like BYD requesting 10% price reductions from suppliers, putting additional pressure on battery makers like CATL 3.

This financial pressure comes despite the global EV battery market being projected to grow substantially from $91.93 billion in 2024 to $251.33 billion by 2035, highlighting the disconnect between market growth and profitability 4.
