CATL to deploy 15k mobile EV charging robots in 100 cities

Contemporary Amperex Technology Company Limited (CATL), the world’s largest EV battery maker, is expanding its diversification strategy through CharGo, a subsidiary that develops mobile storage and charging robots for EVs.

Launched last year, CharGo operates over 100 robots for demonstration and offers charging services in areas where stations are unavailable or full. Drivers can book the service via phone.

CEO Kevin Xu plans to deploy 5,000–15,000 robots globally within two years, starting with 100 cities across China.

The company aims to enter Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe by the second half of 2026.

Xu estimates China’s mobile EV charging robot market could hit 50 billion yuan (US$6.9 billion) by 2030, or 20% of the nation’s EV charging market.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ The evolution of charging infrastructure toward mobility solutions

EV charging has undergone dramatic evolution since the early 20th century, from GE’s first public “Electrant” charging station in 1914 to today’s advanced systems 1.

Mobile charging robots represent the latest phase in this evolution, addressing a fundamental infrastructure challenge: the inability of fixed charging stations to meet diverse user needs in all locations.

This shift toward mobile charging emerged significantly around 2020 in China, with over 20 companies now competing in this space, demonstrating rapid market adoption beyond CATL’s initiative 2.

The technology builds upon decades of charging innovation, from early Mercury Arc Rectifiers to modern high-frequency charging systems that prioritize efficiency and flexibility 3.

CATL’s CharGo robots specifically tackle the problem of charging “pile deserts,” areas where traditional infrastructure is unavailable, inaccessible, or fully occupied, addressing a critical gap in the EV adoption journey.

2️⃣ Market forecasts reveal significant growth potential despite early-stage development

The mobile charging robot market is projected to grow at a remarkable CAGR of 42.9% from 2023 to 2030, indicating extraordinary expansion potential compared to traditional infrastructure 4.

CharGo’s target of deploying 5,000-15,000 units globally within two years represents an ambitious scaling plan when compared to their current deployment of “more than a hundred” demonstration units mentioned in the article.
