CATL sets aside $4.4b to secure EV battery minerals

CATL plans to earmark 30 billion yuan (US$4.4 billion) to set up a subsidiary that would manage and expand its mining assets.

The new unit would combine CATL’s existing mining holdings and pursue mineral projects in China and overseas to help secure raw material supply for its core business, including EV batteries and energy storage systems.

CATL reported net profit of 20.7 billion yuan (US$3.04 billion) in Q1, up 48.5% from the previous quarter and above estimates.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

A defense against rising costs and a foundation for global growth

  • CATL plans a 30 billion yuan (US$4.4 billion) investment to cushion the hit from rising raw material costs that are squeezing profitability 1.
  • In the first quarter of 2026, lithium carbonate prices rose to more than double the level a year earlier. That jump contributed to a year-over-year drop in CATL’s gross margin 1.
  • The move also lines up with overseas work underway with partners, including a nearly US$6 billion battery integration project in Indonesia that runs from nickel mining and processing to battery manufacturing and recycling 2.

Beyond cars and a new industrial model in the race to power AI

  • CATL’s European push fits a “hybrid industrial model,” where host countries get factories plus jobs while technology and supply chain control stay concentrated in China 3.
  • That setup builds strategic interdependence, which shapes geopolitics in industries such as automotive and energy 3.
  • CATL is also looking past electric vehicles and grid storage by aiming at AI power needs. It cites data-center power constraints as a bottleneck, then frames battery-based energy systems as part of the answer 1.
  • In a separate step, CATL plans a strategic investment in the controlling shareholder of Zhongheng Electric, which supplies power systems for data centers. The goal is stronger power electronics capabilities that manage and convert electricity for large-scale energy storage needs 1.
